IN PRAISE OF BEAUTY
20 masterpieces, 20 Museums, for the 20th anniversary of Museo Lia
La Spezia, Museo Lia
24 March-25 August 2017
curated by Andrea Marmori and Francesca Giorgi
Twenty years ago, Amedeo Lia donated his magnificent collection to the town of La Spezia, thus giving birth to the “Amedeo Lia” Civic Museum. Today, for the museum’s 20th anniversary, the Town Council of La Spezia, in collaboration with the Carispezia bank foundation and with the contribution of the Crédit Agricole Carispezia bank, has chosen to honour Amedeo Lia’s memory by bringing together in the magnificent museum dedicated to him 20 additional masterpieces, one for each year of the anniversary. Each of these has been offered for this “collective homage” by a different museum with which the Museo Lia has at some time exchanged scientific knowhow and/or works.
They are works by great masters, a true paeon to beauty, and they include Dosso Dossi, Annibale Carracci, El Greco, Bramantino, Chardin, Jacopo Bassano, Beato Angelico, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Pontormo, Guercino, but also some extraordinary archaeological items or outstanding examples of the applied arts, in perfect harmony with the spirit of the Lia collections.
These illustrious ‘guests’ will be received by the thousand or so great variety of works (from the classical age, late antique age, Middle Ages up to the 18th century) which make up the Lia Collection: paintings; miniatures; bronze, copper, ivory, wooden sculptures; glassware; majolica; art objects which document the taste and culture of art in Italy and Europe. A real gem of the collection are the so-called ‘primitives’, with over 70 panels by Pietro Lorenzetti, Bernardo Daddi, Lippo Memmi, Lippo di Benivieni, Lorenzo di Bicci, Barnaba da Modena, Paolo di Giovanni Fei, Sassetta; also many temperas and oils including works by Vincenzo Foppa, Antonio Vivarini, Bergognone, a probable early Raphael, Pontormo, Titian, Tintoretto, Sebastiano del Piombo, Giovanni Cariani, Gentile and Giovanni Bellini, Bernardo Bellotto, Canaletto. The following institutions have collaborated to render this superb homage: in Italy, the Galleria dell’Accademia, Museo del Bargello, Museo Nazionale di San Marco and Museo Horne for Florence; the Museo Civico Medievale for Bologna; the Pinacoteca di Brera and Diocesano for Milan; the Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi for Lucca; the Gallerie dell’Accademia for Venice; the Accademia Carrara for Bergamo; the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche; and the Pinacoteca Capitolina, Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Venezia and Galleria Borghese for Rome. And from abroad: the Gemaldegalerie of Berlin; the Thyssen Bornemisza museum of Madrid; the Musée Jacquemart-André of Paris; and the Städelsches Kunstinstitut of Frankfurt.
